Red Eye to New York

I started this blog when I was on flight to San Francisco. At that time, I thought it would be year I would visit different cities and would blog my travels. Although I did some traveling, I usually got lost in the moment and never touched my blogs.

This year will be different and what better location to kick off my travel blogging than the city that I fell in love with as a child.

After two delays, I took a red eye last night and after a sleepless night on the plane, landed at JFK.

The flight itself was not bad. Every chance I get to fly out of Long Beach is amazing. Not having to deal with the circus that is LAX is always a great thing. Plus, I love flying JetBlue. I collect my points and the planes usually have WiFi and DirectTV. This was my first red eye flight with JetBlue and was happy to find these packs provided.

Since I was next to the window, it was colder than I expected. I ended up purchasing a blanket which is a mistake that I will be sure not to make again. (Lesson 1)

While on the flight I booked my reservation for my baggage stow. The plan is to explore the city until I can check into my hotel in Madison, NJ. Already I made one mistake in my reservation but I will save that post for my next post.

As I sat in my Lyft to the city, I could not help but feel a bubble of excitement. Those who know me personally, know that one of my dreams is to someday live in New York. When I was a child, I remember hearing “..if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere…” and I truly took those words to heart. Now I am in the city and I am having to deal with things we do not deal with in LA. (Everyone uses Lyft/Uber in LA. Even though I took a Lyft in from the airport, I had to hail a cab after I had issues with the first bagbnb).

Time to wrap up this blog. I plan on packing up, and start some sightseeing. Be sure to follow my this blog to see more of my trip and other adventures!

Happy Travels!

Welcome to Jet Away Diva!

When I was six months old I went on my first plane ride from the Philippines to the US. As a military kid, I was accustomed to moving every 3-5 years. Throw in a pair of parents always planning a trip somewhere and a strong case of perpetual wanderlust set in my system.

After deciding I wanted to be a writer, I always had this dream of one day becoming a travel writer. Maybe I could work for National Geographic and take pictures of the world around me while writing about my experiences? I had these visions of some day wandering the world and showing other what I saw to encourage them to wander the world. However, that was a some day idea.

Sitting alone, awaiting takeoff.

This past Friday, I sat on a plane on the rain awaiting takeoff. It would be a short flight to San Francisco and I had my headphones, playlist and nook ready. However, it was slightly bittersweet. I sat on this plane alone and that was not the original plan. Honestly, it was not the first time I traveled alone. Traveling across the country by myself was a regular thing. Yet, this was the first time I had no one waiting for me to return.

It was then that I snapped this picture and thought of my daydream of being a travel writer and that’s when it hit me. As I posted the pic to Instagram, I created the hashtag jetawaydiva.  Why not get away if I can? No one would be missing me. And why should my travel writer idea only be a daydream? Why not now?

Every year my sister and I get together to discuss our goals. We do not say “resolutions.” There is a certain power in words and using one synonymous with an attempt that usually fails before the end of January is not very encouraging. Instead we focus on aspirations and not only set goals but plans to achieve those goals. By the end of the trip, I had decided that this would be the year of my travel blog.

And so, I present to you the Jet Away Diva. Here, I will post photos, and write ups from my travels along with articles and tips for those wanting to plan their own adventure.

Happy Trails!
